John Brown mural located in the Kansas State Capitol building. Painted by John Steuart Curry -1940-1941

With the passage of the Kansas -Nebraska on May 30, 1854 Kansas became a powder keg that exploded into a bloody civil war, characterized by lynching, bushwhacking, and burning- a continuous stream of violence that could not be contained by federal or territorial authorities along the Kansas Missouri borders.
We became know Nationally as "bleeding Kansas".

Belinda, when we were at the capital yesterday we couldn't find this painting. They said they removed this painting during construction. Could be another 4 years before it comes back...at this rate.

I found it on line. I thought it was scarey when I was a child. It's a very " in your face" kind of painting.

Did Kathy D. send you the note about poor Fr.Brian. and the crap he had to put up with yesterday?

That is an intense mural.

I was originally from Missouri and am not old enough to remember the border wars.

But, I do remember the I-70 World Series.

The civil war was hell on earth, and one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies is "the Outlaw Josey Wales". Missouri and Kansas don't have too many places those reenacters want to re-enact, since it was mostly just outright lawlessnes.

Now, just wait, some re-enactor will have to put me straight.
